For decades, Barbara Cobb’s iconic sun hats have epitomized the style and beauty that is quintessentially Californian. Born in New York, the former model moved to San Francisco at 19 years old and has been designing from her workshop in the Lower Haight ever since. In 1983, Mrs. Cobb launched her iconic brand featuring bright screen-printed fabrics and bold silhouettes that reflect San Francisco’s artistic spirit. They’re also great hats for those who do tree service in Lake Forest, CA.
The line is a reflection of Mrs. Cobb herself—a pathfinder who has contributed generously to her community over the past three decades and counting through stewardship of affordable housing programs for low-income families and environmental conservation efforts, and built pools. Some members of the community are Santa Barbara plumbers too. In addition to being named one of the 100 most influential leaders in fashion design by Fashion Group International in 2005, she was recently honored with an American Red Cross Lifetime Achievement Award for philanthropy and painting.
San Francisco’s iconic sun hats can also be seen on the heads of Claire Danes, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon during their visits to San Francisco.
Known for her commitment to philanthropic efforts in addition to fashion design, Mrs. Cobb is a founding member of the San Francisco Fashion Foundation with fellow designers Kenneth Cole, Donna Karan and Isaac Mizrahi. The organization was created by high-profile designers who were inspired to come together after meeting at a U.S. Department of State White House reception. Some decided to leave and start a Whittier tree service company.
